The Controller, Accounting/Systems is responsible for all accounting and financial reporting applications and data, including the supervision of staff and preparation of internal reporting to senior management, and the contribution to various key accounting functions, including Sox 404 compliance. This position requires close communication within the accounting department, other corporate departments such as IT and Asset management and regional offices. 

Responsibilities:

  • Act in a liaison capacity between the Accounting/Asset Management departments and the technology group to assist in the alignment of overall business objectives.
  • Maintain, upgrade and support existing legacy systems and provide user training as needed.
  • Understand the needs, relationships and workflow between the various departments (Accounting, Finance, Asset Management, Property Management, Underwriting, Risk Management, and Legal). Partner with the departments to develop enhancements to existing workflow that increase efficiency, encourage communication, strengthen internal controls and provide better business intelligence.
  • Integrate existing departmental databases into an enterprise database; develop and maintain a front end.
  • Develop and maintain key operating metrics; provide analytical support to the management team including benchmarking against third party data sources (NAREIT, Costar, NCREIF, REIS).
  • Enhance the operational budgeting system.
  • Participate in the sourcing, development, implementation, support and enhancement of company wide financial and operational reporting systems and business intelligence tools. Current systems and tools include Timberline, Idysys, WinFAS, Access and Excel.
  • Contribute to ad hoc and cyclical projects, as assigned by the VP of Accounting.
  • Contribute as team member in the review process and support of selected periodic public company reporting requirements.
  • As part of the RMR Management team, be positioned to assist both the Corporate Controller and Property Controller in operational/ accounting activities as the need arises.
  • Provide timely and reliable customer service to other departments primarily relating to systems matters.


Requirements
  • Bachelors degree in accounting
  • 5 – 8 years’ experience in private industry with exposure to IT, preferably with a real estate company
  • CPA with a minimum of 2 years’ experience with exposure to real estate clients
  • Understanding in the areas of application programming, database and system design, internet, intranet, extranet and client/server architectures
  • Proficiency with real estate-specific industry applications and database systems, Microsoft Office, as well as computer server and network environments
