Architecture is the art and science of shaping the built environment through design. Typically, this involves the creation of buildings in a collaborative process in conjunction with clients and contractors.

Architects strive to create environments that embody the principles of 'firmness, commodity, and delight' (Vitruvius, 25 B.C.) within the limitations of budget, schedule, building codes and other regulations.

The design process used by architects is often broken down into phases including:

1. Programming: identifying client needs
2. Schematic design: initial design concepts
3. Design development: refinement of selected design
4. Construction documents: preparation of final drawings and specifications for bidding
5. Bidding phase: Answer contractor questions and the awarding of the project
6. Construction administration: Observe the construction process and approve contractor's request for payment from owner.

The practice of Architecture has evolved from hand drafting to CAD drawing and is currently moving towards BIM (Building Information Management), which is an electronic model of a project with additional information embedded. Currently, sustainability and green building issues are a major consideration. Architects today work to create healthy environments that utilize less resources and energy.
