Job Description/Role and Responsibilities

Position Title: Controller

Reports to: COO

Direct reports to this position: All Accounting Staff

Status: Exempt

 

Job Summary:

The Controller is responsible for leading the accounting operations of the company, to include the production of periodic financial reports and budgets, maintenance of adequate accounting records, preparation of tax returns and regulatory compliance. At all times, the Controller will maintain a comprehensive set of controls designed to mitigate risk, enhance the accuracy of the company's reported financial results, and ensure that reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles and/or tax returns and regulatory compliance.  

 

Essential Functions:

  1. Ensure that accounts payable are paid in a timely manner
  2. Ensure that all reasonable discounts are taken on accounts payable
  3. Ensure that accounts receivable are collected promptly
  4. Process payroll in a timely manner
  5. Ensure that monthly bank reconciliations are completed in a timely manner
  6. Ensure that required tax and loan payments are made in a timely manner
  7. Maintain the chart of accounts
  8. Maintain an orderly accounting filing system
  9. Issue timely and complete financial statements
  10. Coordinate the preparation of corporate and property level quarterly and annual reports
  11. Recommend benchmarks against which to measure the performance of company operations
  12. Measure and report financial and operating metrics
  13. Manage the production of annual budgets and forecasts
  14. Calculate variances from the budget and report significant issues to management
  15. Provide a system for cost management and reporting
  16. Provide financial analyses as needed, in particular for capital investments
  17. Coordinate the provision of information to external auditors for annual audits
  18. Monitor debt levels and compliance with debt covenants
  19. Comply with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and prepare all corporate and property entity tax filings
  20. Calculate, pay and track investor distributions

  • Must be highly proficient in Microsoft Excel and Quickbooks and preferably in one or more property management/accounting/ERP systems such as Yardi, RentManager, AppFolio, RealPage, Buildium, NetSuite, Oracle, SAP
  • Must have superlative verbal and written communication skills

 

 

Education, Training and Certifications:

  • The Controller candidate should have a Bachelor's degree in accounting or business administration, or equivalent business experience and 10+ years of progressively responsible experience in an accounting firm or a startup, growth company, large company or division of a corporation with at least $20mm of annual revenue. Preference will be given to candidates with significant real estate investment/property management experience and the Certified Public Accountant or Certified Management Accountant designation. Spanish language proficiency is a plus.

 

Experience:

  • 10+ years of relevant accounting experience with at least 3 years of significant real estate exposure
