Building 12 Vice President of Development

 

Forest City Realty Trust is seeking an experienced Vice President of Development, to be based in our San Francisco office, to lead the visioning and development of a unique historic rehabilitation effort central to the placemaking of the Pier 70 mixed-use project. Pier 70 represents the opportunity to transform a dilapidated former manufacturing facility into a premier waterfront district adjacent to the burgeoning Dogpatch neighborhood and, just south of UCSF's Mission Bay campus, the new Golden State Warriors multi-purpose arena. The 28-acre mixed use development will contain for-sale and rental housing, new creative and/or life sciences office space, arts and creative spaces, housing across a spectrum of affordability, local manufacturing and local retail, and creation of new waterfront parks.

 

Building 12 is the heart of the placemaking vision for the Pier 70 district and the first significant retail destination for the project. It is envisioned to be a European public market experience that includes an authentic retail experience centered on local small scale manufacturers and an upper floor of office space unlike any in the Bay Area. The proposed concept includes raising the entire building structure 9 feet to address projected sea level rise, adding a new mezzanine level, constructing a new south facing exterior façade and integrating the surrounding plaza open spaces into the overall parks and streetscape design. Significant attention will be required to vision, assemble and foster the success of a synergistic mix of retail, maker, food and beverage and other users that create a public market visitor experience that serves as an anchor and draw for the project in the first phase.

 

This is a rare opportunity to join a unique real estate development company working on a transformative project with a talented and inspired local San Francisco team.

Key responsibilities of the position include:

  • Lead design vision for creation of exceptional public space and retail environment
  • Identify and cultivate manufacturing, retail and food and beverage tenants to create a unique visitor experience and project amenity
  • Work with FC construction services group to manage building design team and review of building and engineering designs by Port of San Francisco
  • Work with commercial office brokers and other team members to market the top floor office space
  • Work with FC financial analyst to track cost estimates, financial projections and investment return metrics
  • Work, as appropriate, with Port of San Francisco, State Historic Preservation Office and National Park Service in processing of historic tax credit application
  • Interface with the landscape architect and engineering design team working on design of plaza and streetscape and infrastructure improvements adjacent to all 4 sides of building to create seamless indoor/outdoor experience of building

Given the uniqueness of the vision and project, it is likely that candidates may come from diverse backgrounds and perhaps not a traditional real estate development background. In particular, we seek someone who:

  • Has experience creating dynamic experiences for people to gather, play and live
  • Is visionary in seeing potential for culture making as a sum of parts.
  • Is a connector who is tapped into creative and entrepreneurial energies, who sees trends as they are emerging, particularly in the midst of changing retail trends.
  • Has the energy and skills to communicate and sell a vision

 

We are looking for someone to join our office that brings a positive attitude, enjoys collaborating as part of a team, learns quickly, takes initiative and proactively tackles new challenges and is willing to pitch in where needed.

 

 

 


 

  • This position requires an Undergraduate Degree in Engineering, Development Design/Planning, Law, or related discipline.
  • An additional degree that is preferred for this position include: Master Degree in Real Estate Development.
  • 8-10 years of required progressively responsible experience in direct real estate development.
  • Required skills for the position include: excellent communication and presentation skills, ability to interact with various officials, consultants and community groups, strong problems solving skills, creative thinker and solid organization and leadership skills, working knowledge of the principles and practices of real estate, ability to handle multiple projects and deadlines, and strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Management of staff member (assistants, associates, managers, and/or directors)

  • A preferred skill for this position include: SAP.
  • Occassional travel.
