The Facilities & Operations (F&O) Division at SLAC is dedicated to the stewardship of the laboratory’s conventional facilities infrastructure. Reporting to the Facilities & Operations (F&O) Division Director, the Facilities & Operations Division Deputy Director will assist in defining and executing the Division’s leadership, strategic and tactical planning, and ensuring that each Division employee commits fully to quality, safety, efficiency, and customer service standards in line with business objectives and SLAC’s vision and mission. The Deputy Director is the F&O Division Director’s designee, and has decision-making authorities, responsibilities, and accountabilities in the Director’s absence.

The Facilities & Operations Deputy Director will assist the Director in executing responsibilities for overseeing the full lifecycle of mission critical conventional infrastructure activities including planning, design, and construction of new facilities, as well as the operation, maintenance, renovation and repair of the existing facilities. This includes 150 buildings (1.6 million square feet) electrical distribution (230kV to 110V), mechanical, process and control systems supporting accelerator operations, research laboratories housing (laser, materials, chemical and other dry and wet labs), in addition to office space and manufacturing facilities.

As steward of these systems, Facilities & Operations is responsible for plant operations, planning and implementing reliability-based maintenance, and evaluating and addressing the long-term infrastructure system evolution to support SLAC’s future mission needs.

Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Executes on leadership and management initiatives for SLAC’s Facilities & Operations Division services, organization, and policies including site planning, design construction, operations, improvements, and maintenance.
  • Personally models and promotes safety and customer service to a staff of approximately 150.   Accountable for developing standards and monitoring techniques for quality and customer service in all areas of the Facilities & Operations Division.
  • Ensures Facilities & Operations strategies and priorities are consistent with the SLAC vision and mission.
  • Evaluates and provides tactical oversight of the functions of the Facilities & Operations Division within the budget to meet the Lab Agendas, Business Plans, and systems availability requirements.
  • Develops budget proposals, manages and meets annual operating and project budgets and provides recommendations on the planning for the appropriate construction, infrastructure and operational services that will support the Laboratory's scientific programs and the ongoing operational maintenance requirements.
  • Develops strategic plans for facilities renewal and investment. Leads the planning for the appropriate infrastructure and operational services that will support the Laboratory's scientific programs.
  • Ensures the mission readiness of conventional facilities and facilities personnel by interfacing with appropriate stakeholders.
  • Works with the scientific community and members of the Facilities & Operations leadership team in developing and executing a plan for all scheduled, unscheduled and deferred maintenance.
  • Ensures project delivery by team project managers, field construction managers, project controls.
  • Develops and delivers projects within cost, scope, schedules, and risk management requirements of a portfolio of projects exceeding $400M. Serves as a partner to, and source of leadership and influence, to the Lab Director and Lab senior management.
  • Partners with Stanford University, the Department of Energy, and other National Labs to ensure the development and implementation of best business practices.
  • Represents SLAC in a wide variety of activities involving the DOE, Stanford University, and other DOE-sponsored Laboratories, and chairs and/or participates on committees and working groups to address Laboratory-wide issues.
  • Develops and maintains strong working relationships with scientific program leadership, ensuring that short term and long term requirements for facilities infrastructure and services are aligned with the scientific Directorates' goals, plans and projects



  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, architecture, facilities management, or an equivalent combination of technical education, training, and experience related discipline; an advanced degree is desirable.
  • Minimum 10 + years of related, progressively responsible experience requiring extensive leadership and strategic expertise in facilities operations, maintenance, and planning, performing duties similar to those listed above.
  • Extensive experience and background in plant operations and maintenance management.
  • Experience and background in project and program management of conventional facilities.
  • Experience in managing a facilities department of a private industry complex, university or government research complex with demonstrated improvement in efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
  • Experience and technical knowledge of best practices in the facilities management discipline (including engineering, architecture, construction, and maintenance activities); and proven experience in balancing the role of change agent and stabilizing force.
  • Diverse knowledge of utility systems and the operation and maintenance of various building types; knowledge of various trade support areas, including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, instrumentation, safety systems, carpentry, fleet and equipment maintenance.
  • Proven leadership and management of a complex organization, providing effective oversight and guidance of operational, management and administrative issues.
  • Experienced people manager, including leading in a union environment.
  • Ability to interact at the highest level of management, both internally and externally, in a constructive and collaborative manner and in a way that appropriately represents the Lab
  • Experience working in an environment dedicated to quality, safety, and customer service.
  • Working knowledge of relevant government policies, regulations, and practices.
