Associated Estates Realty Corporation (AEC) is one of the largest property managers in the United States and currently owns or manages more than 110 apartment communities containing approximately 25,000 units located in 12 states. AEC became a public company in November 1993 and was formed to continue the business of its predecessor, the Associated Estates Group, which was founded in the mid-1960s as a builder, manager and owner of apartment communities in Cleveland. Following its initial public offering (IPO) in 1993, AEC expanded into Columbus, Ohio; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Indianapolis, Indiana; and Michigan. In June 1998, AEC acquired privately-owned MIG Realty Advisors, Inc., extending its geographic presence beyond the Midwest. Today, the Company’s portfolio is still predominantly located in the Midwest, with the majority of those properties located in three markets: Cleveland (Northeast Ohio); Columbus (Central Ohio); and Michigan. The Company employs approximately 800 people, and has been recognized as a “Northcoast 99” winner by The Employers Resource Council, representing the top 99 employers to work for in Northeast Ohio. In addition, several of the Company’s apartment communities and employees have won numerous industry and professional awards, including NAHB Multifamily’s prestigious “Pillars of the Industry” awards.
