Amtrak
About the Company
Amtrak is America’s Railroad®, the nation’s intercity passenger rail service and its high-speed rail operator. Amtrak and its state and commuter partners move people, the economy and the nation forward.
Amtrak is governed by a nine member board of directors appointed by the President of the United States and confirmed by the U.S. Senate. Amtrak is a federally-chartered corporation, with the Federal government as majority stockholder. The company is operated and managed as a for-profit corporation providing intercity rail passenger transportation as its principal business.
Amtrak operates passenger service on 21,000 miles of track primarily owned by freight railroads connecting 500 destinations in 46 states, the District of Columbia and three Canadian provinces. Amtrak also operates commuter rail systems on behalf of several states and transit agencies. In 2014, nearly 31 million passengers travelled on Amtrak on more than 300 daily trains and speeds up to 150 mph.
Amtrak is an organization on the move. The company’s growth over the past ten years, especially on intercity corridors between 100-500 miles, hints at the tremendous opportunity of developing a robust, nationwide passenger rail system focused on city pairs. In such corridors throughout the globe, high-speed and higher-speed trains are not only an essential mode of transportation, but also a significant driver of local development and economic growth. The company continues to grow ridership and revenue while providing safe and secure travel across the United States.
