Charleston County Government - Facilities Operations

Charleston County is located along the southeastern coast of South Carolina and has its County Government seated in North Charleston. The County encompasses approximately 919 square miles with a coastline that stretches nearly 100 miles along the Atlantic Ocean. The County’s population is growing rapidly and is estimated to be more than 375,000 with a median age of 34. The County’s rich blend of culture, economic activity, environmental beauty and historic tapestry makes it one of the most distinguished counties in the nation. A recognized leader, Charleston County is a proud community that strives to protect both its historic treasures and its environment, while still keeping an eye toward future development and citizens’ needs. The County continues to draw national recognition, winning dozens of local, state and national awards for its innovative programs and services, and its world-class restaurants and arts festivals. Charleston County operates under a Council-Administrator form of government. Policy-making and legislative authority are vested in a 9-member governing council elected to single member districts on a partisan basis. The County Council responsibilities include passing ordinances and policies, approving the budget, appointing committee members, and hiring the County’s Clerk of Council, County Administrator, and appointing the Internal Auditor, and Attorney. The County Administrator is managing the day-to-day operations of the County Government. There are four Deputy County Administrators. The Facilities Management Department reports to the Deputy County Administrator for General Services and the Design and Construction Manager reports to the Director of Facilities Management.
