JOB SUMMARY
Assist the Chief Engineer in directing the engineering departments operations (provide technical and administrative support), preplanning of mechanical preventive maintenance, and supervises and directs maintenance personnel in installation, repair, and maintenance of all mechanical and electrical equipment and systems. Assumes the Chief Engineers' responsibilities as necessary. The Assistant Chief Engineer must strive for the highest level of professionalism, while meeting the clients needs, and a commitment to achieving the goal of 100% uptime within critical or noncritical facility operations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervise and direct maintenance staff on shift and monitor performance of assigned responsibilities. Perform and/or direct the performance of all maintenance departmental service requests, insuring that work performed in these areas is accomplished efficiently with a minimum amount of disruption and inconvenience. Check malfunctioning equipment and ascertain corrective action required to restore to satisfactory operating condition.
Develops and/or reviews Maintenance Critical Environment Work Authorizations (CEWAs) for assigned facilities and systems. Reviews and concurs with Construction CEWAs for assigned systems.
Leads or directly operates and monitors critical and non-critical system equipment and components. Oversees CEWA work efforts (including 3rd party contractors) for the safe and compliant operation, maintenance (corrective and preventive), and modification of critical equipment. Disables and enables fire alarm control panels and systems.
Provide training and supervision aimed at expanding the capabilities of the operations staff. Specific duties include, but not limited to: Demonstrating the proper use and care of tools and instruments, giving hands on instruction in basic maintenance, safety, and trouble shooting procedures, recommending relevant outside engineering courses for enrollment and instilling an overall level of professionalism in manner and appearance.
Supervise and implement the preventative maintenance program. Specific duties include but are not limited to: scheduling of preventative maintenance with a minimum disruption of building services, performing and/or delegating preventative maintenance tasks to the appropriately qualified maintenance staff member, orders parts and equipment required for repair, maintenance and installation of new equipment and facilities, and maintains inventory.
Performs Building Management System Console operations.
Direct the performance of contracted maintenance work as needed. Specific tasks include but are not limited to: insuring the timely performance of maintenance contract work, overseeing the fulfillment of equipment warrantee obligations by the installer and securing equipment manuals and drawings from the installers/contractors.
Respond immediately to emergency situations (fire, evacuation, equipment failure, etc.) and customer concerns.
Comply with departmental policy for the safe storage, usage, and disposal of hazardous materials. Maintains a clean and safe workplace.
Insure the availability of an adequate operating inventory of tools and supplies. Specific duties include, but not limited to: Preparing and submitting purchase-order requests, developing sources for stock materials and performing periodic checks for supplies.
Responsible for the operational management and effective daily leadership and administration of the engineering team with the objectives of safely, efficiently, and effectively operating machinery and systems in a cost-effective manner. The Assistant Chief Engineer must ensure the highest level of professionalism, while meeting the clients' needs, and commitment to achieving the goal of 100% uptime throughout the engineering team. Responsible for protecting and improving the value of the clients' assets and ensuring that building engineering systems continue to perform their intended function.
Limited travel is required in this position.
Performs additional job duties as requested.
REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES
5+ years experience in data center operations, maintenance, and engineering management supporting a Tier 3 or greater facility operations.
Strong working technical knowledge and understanding of critical data center systems, including HVAC, Standby emergency power, uninterruptable power supplies, and associated infrastructure.
Applicable license / permit for trade as required (e.g. HVAC, Journeyman or Master Electrician, City/State License).
Ability to effectively respond to sensitive issues, complex inquiries or complaints from clients, co-workers, supervisor, and/or management.
Proficient in basic computer applications and software such as MS Office.
IV. DESIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES
Operating Engineers license (SMA) or equivalent
Experience with CMMS and BAS
Prior experience in development of critical environment programs and procedures
Demonstrated verbal/written communication skills.
V. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Employee will be required to frequently bend, squat, climb stairs and ladders, stand and walk and occasionally crawl and climb.
Employee is required to handle objects (manual de dexterity), push and pull, reach above shoulder level and have fine finger movements. The employee must be able to carry/lift loads of up to 50 lbs.
