Vivid Economics has now opened a US office in Washington DC office in order to better serve and collaborate with our North American clients and partners. We are building out the office rapidly, and are looking to recruit senior team members with an entrepreneurial mindset and a deep passion for the work we do. We’ve built a dynamic environment, and are looking for team members able to take ownership of strategic initiatives and support the growth of our US services and offerings – building on the expertise and support from existing UK and US team members.

We are currently recruiting for a Manager or Senior Manager with expertise in cities and infrastructure, to support internal and external project management and develop our strategy and expertise in this area. The application of economics to questions of sustainability urbanization and infrastructure delivery has been core to our work across the world as formalized with the creation of a Cities and Infrastructure practice group in 2016. The candidate is expected to take a lead on growing and delivering our portfolio of cities-related projects, with a particular focus on North American clients and offerings, including supporting economic development planning and project delivery, municipal finance and sustainable infrastructure delivery. We have a strong portfolio of work across public and private sector clients, including ground-breaking studies on climate-smart cities, development of industrial clusters and application of economics for strategic development in cities and regions.

While the successful candidate is expected to focus on the core role outlined here, there will be opportunities to drive the broader North America strategy and to contribute to a range of other projects across the company’s focal areas.

Description of the role

The position of Manager is a senior project management role with responsibility for excellent economic and strategic analysis, project delivery and client engagement. A successful Manager is able to analyse complex economic problems, design and apply advanced methods, and produce high quality end products. A Manager will also be expected to manage lead staff and projects, and to develop and maintain client and partner relationships.


Strategic advisory experience is essential. The role will involve working in teams as well as independently to formulate evidence-based insights and translate them into credible, clear and compelling advice. The candidate will have worked in a consultancy, financial institution, think tank or NGO, and will understand what it takes to manage and successfully deliver projects in challenging contexts internationally. Experience working with urban planner, architects, engineers, federal, state or local governments or international development organizations would be an advantage.

Primary day-to-day duties include:

  • Structuring and applying economic frameworks to analytical problems;
  • Developing client solutions, addressing client input, and designing materials that effectively communicate recommendations;
  • Maintaining and developing relationships with existing clients, as well as a broader professional network;
  • Keeping updated with knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; participating in professional organisations;
  • Identifying and contributing to business development and marketing opportunities;
  • Participating in company improvements; potentially leading on internal change initiatives;
  • Maintaining and developing relationships with existing clients, as well as a broader professional network; and
  • Developing and seeing through plans; forecasting resources; preparing budgets; and supporting the development of junior staff.
A Manager will take the primary lead on projects as a whole. As a result, a Manager may supervise up to seven people, of Senior Economist, Economist and Analyst grade. A Manager will report to a Practice Lead, and in some cases directly to a Director.
Some domestic and international travel is expected as part of this role – subject to compliance with Covid-19-related government restrictions and Vivid Economics’ policies for safeguarding our staff.

Experience and qualifications

Candidates must have sufficient experience to demonstrate competency in the duties described. As a guide, eight or more years of experience, with at least two years related to economic or financial analysis, tend to be required to achieve these competencies. Previous consultancy or private sector experience is strongly preferred, especially in the financial sector.

Previous experience managing projects and complex analysis is required. Good business development and project management experience would be preferred, particularly for private sector projects in a consultancy environment.

A degree in economics or finance or a closely related field is required, with strong academic performance. A Masters degree or Ph.D. in a relevant field is preferred. Fluency in English is essential.

As part of Cities and Infrastructure work, the candidate must have a demonstrated track record of working on relevant topics, delivering high quality research to inform senior decision-making in government, international organisations, and/or private sector organizations.  The candidate will have experience applying economic analysis to urban systems and the design, financing and management of infrastructure. Relevant experience includes analysis of the economics of urban agglomeration; appraising the impacts of (urban) infrastructure interventions on economic and sustainability indicators; identifying and designing policies, interventions and governance arrangements that can support the sustainable development of cities; and analysing and/or structuring infrastructure financing arrangements.

In addition, any of the following criteria is preferred:

  • A network of contacts in the urban sector, including urban planners/designers/engineers, international organisations, and governments;
  • Experience in preparing pitches and proposals, and delivering the work;
  • Advanced project management skills, including oversight of multiple concurrent project teams.
For consideration at the Senior Manager level, candidates should have proven experience developing commercial offers and engaging potential clients in the urban space across North America, including in local government, real estate development industry and NGOs/philanthropies working on sustainable urbanization issues.
