Head of Engineering – US Real Estate Debt & Equity

Job Summary

Successful candidate will serve as the head of engineering for both the US debt and equity real estate business. In addition to managing the in-house and third-party regional engineering teams, will be responsible for reviewing and revising, as appropriate, the structure for the US engineering team, managing and hiring as appropriate, establishing key performance measures for the group, developing tools for measurement, and driving performance. She/he will work together with the leadership team, heads of portfolio management, asset management, and product management to create an engineering focus that drives efficiencies across the debt and equity business. Candidate should have exceptionally strong consultant relationships throughout the real estate industry, a strong background in hands-on debt originations, at-risk development and equity acquisitions across asset classes, and proven track record of leadership and building of culture. Charlotte is the preferred location, but willing to be flexible for the right candidate.

 

Primary Responsibilities

· Management and oversight of the entire Engineering function within the USREE business including creation, refinement, and implementation of strategy, management of the engineering team

· Lead and manage engineering team, establish and test due diligence protocols, refine and expand the existing engineering database and on-line tools to improve efficiencies, develop and refine operating guidelines, drive and expand the firm’s sustainability program and mentor teams

· Overall responsibility for managing engineering and environmental due diligence for all debt originations, construction lending, at-risk developments, equity acquisitions and ongoing capital improvement projects for equity portfolio

· Participation as a member of the leadership team in setting firm-wide goals and objectives and in preparing and implementing tactical plans to meet those goals

· Maintain appropriate professional affiliations and memberships

 

Qualifications

· Registered professional engineer or architect with at least 15+ years of progressive responsibility and experience in major commercial building design, construction techniques, code compliance, sustainability, seismic risk assessment and environmental site assessment

· Understanding of engineering procedures in support of mortgage underwriting, construction lending, at-risk development and equity acquisitions

· Exceptional engineering and analytical skills with the ability to teach, articulate and communicate to variety of audiences inside, as well as, outside of the organization

· Must be able to communicate effectively with Senior Management and internal business partners

· A positive attitude, strong work ethic with a player-coach approach and a desire to work collaboratively across the organization

· Must possess a high standard of professionalism and integrity

· Able and willing to travel when needed, particularly as necessary to effectively manage the due diligence process for important transactions – approximately 20% travel is required

· Strong written and verbal presentation skills

· Highly organized and able to prioritize and meet tight schedules

· Ability to make key recommendations and decisions

· Computer literacy and technical diversity are a must
