Description

About our Urban Landscape Work:

We are witnessing a major shift in human settlement patterns: 82% of our national population lives in cities, with an estimated additional 3 million people globally moving to urban areas each week. While urban living can lead to more efficient use of resources and smaller carbon footprints, it also disconnects people from wild spaces and the landscapes where we grow our food.

In efforts to maintain and restore this connection, we design and build wild and agriculturally productive spaces in urban communities that work better for people and for the environment. We also know that green spaces – regardless of size – help to create healthy communities, can produce an abundance of food, and provide ecosystem services, such as habitat for pollinators and cleaner air.

Three years ago, we designed, built, and operated Denver’s first open-air soil-based rooftop farm, and launched a native and perennial-based landscaping design and operating business that is growing quickly. Alongside operating these projects, we are collecting data on their ecological and economic impacts, as we build a case and portfolio for how we can scale this work in Colorado, and, eventually,  to other urban areas around the country. We are now ready and excited to expand this segment of our work through this new position, the Urban Landscapes and Manager!

Who We Are Looking For:
We are seeking an Urban Landscapes Manager to join our Denver-based team. In this role, you will collaborate with and lead our team as we further define, build and grow our urban work. We seek a colleague who brings passion, drive and lived experience that can shape and deepen how we engage with urban landscapes and diverse communities, further solidifying the ecological and social impact outcomes of this work. In this position you will frequently collaborate with other members of our team, and specifically work closely alongside our Ecological Design team. You will report directly to the Director of Operations. We seek qualified candidates who identify with the descriptions below, with experiences and skills that will nourish our team and culture, and contribute to our growing impact:

  • Inspired – by the current work that we do and eager to contribute to our continued growth and evolution.
  • Committed – to making a tangible positive impact in communities, food systems, conservation, equity, and climate change.
  • Driver – finds joy in taking concepts from idea to execution, jumping between working in the weeds with hands literally in soil, big picture strategy, and managing administrative processes.
  • Entrepreneurial – energized by creating new paths forward, comfortable navigating the uncertainty and ambiguity of building something without a handbook.
  • Community Development – expertise or transferrable knowledge to work in food access, urban land use, economic mobility, environmental justice, affordable housing, and other community development sectors.
  • Financial Literacy – comfortable reading Profit and Loss Statements, and using financial dashboards to take actions, pivot, and change operational decisions.
  • Relationship Builder – brings energy and empathy to building external relationships and mentoring a small, growing team.

In this role, you will be expected to:

Strategic Planning, Partnerships & Business Development:
  • Collaborate with, as well as lead our team in further developing the vision and strategy for our work in urban landscapes.
  • Identify project opportunities (both mission and vision aligned RFP opportunities as well as private contracts). Lead the subsequent outreach, relationship-building, and contract development. Contribute to these processes across our full range of projects (both urban and where appropriate, across the broader landscape of our work).
  • Facilitate and collaborate with a diverse group of external project stakeholders including: Denver Downtown Partnership, the city of Denver, Municipalities, Universities, Departments of Parks and Recreation, Departments of Transportation, Utility Companies, Real Estate Groups, and other stakeholders that manage large urban landscapes).

Compliance, Permitting, Public Policy
  • Interpret municipal and county code as it relates to urban landscape project opportunities. Stay up to date on new policy as it pertains to our broader work at the federal, state, and local levels. Serve as a general policy lead and liaison for our team.
  • Vet opportunities against local policies to ensure alignment and project possibility.
  • Where opportunity is possible but a policy or code doesn’t currently exist, lead the process of creating a pitch to the appropriate stakeholder to propose a pathway forward (e.g., for our recent rooftop farming project, we pitched the city of Denver to change county code for a project).

Project & Operations Management
  • Lead all operations for urban landscaping, urban agriculture, and urban community development projects.
  • Hire, mentor, and manage a small team of people, from contract landscaping crew members to internal team members.
  • Develop contracts and scopes of work with third party contractors, and provide ongoing stakeholder management.
  • Closely partner and collaborate with Bio-Logical Capital’s ecological design and operations team members.
  • Lead the annual budgeting process by researching key assumptions, evaluating historic performance and forecasting future needs. Track and maintain budget performance throughout the year by analyzing project financials.
  • Oversee and support all urban administrative and operating processes.

Generous benefit package that includes: healthcare, SIMPLE IRA match, summer Fridays, family leave policies, and paid time off.
