About the Role
We’re looking for an energetic, agile, and detail oriented Associate Counsel to work at our fast growing start up. The ideal candidate can learn the law, navigate the regulatory landscape, understand and utilize cutting edge property management software, and work semi-independently on mission critical issues facing Common’s consumer business. The focus of this role is to manage the legal aspects of Common’s relationship with its members across the platform - currently in over a dozen jurisdictions -- and expanding rapidly. You’ll be designing new processes and documents governing various aspects of Common’s product offering, working with outside counsel on evictions, collections and other matters , managing jurisdiction-specific regulatory risk, and provide day-to-day legal support to consumer facing teams. In addition, Common is growing, fast, and the Associate Counsel will have exposure to a variety of legal matters which will involve knowledge of, or a wiliness and ability to learn, aspects of intellectual property law, corporate law, advertising law, privacy law, insurance law, and employment law. The Associate Counsel will report directly to Common’s Vice President, Legal.
Responsibilities
- Educate and maintain the team’s compliance with, and knowledge of, jurisdiction-specific landlord-tenant regulations and processes, including regulations and processes related to summary proceedings, security deposit return, habitability, and abandonment;
- Develop and update jurisdiction specific legal documentation related to tenancy and the purchase of goods and services by Common’s members;
- Help ensure that Common remains in compliance with governmental permitting, licensing, reporting, and operational requirements for property management and the leasing of residential real estate;
- Assist with developing, refining, managing, supporting and enforcing Common’s agreements and policies with tenants;
- Help develop systems to scale all of the above.
- Learn and become proficient in understand Common’s property management software suite, including
- Ironclad, Salesforce and Entrata.
- Undertake other projects as required as part of a small legal team.
Qualifications
- You should have some knowledge of, and an interest in, one or more of the following: landlord-tenant law, affordable housing regulations, and/or real estate licensing.
- A belief that legal challenges should be addressed with urgency, diligence and creativity.
- Ability to learn new areas of the law and regulatory frameworks, quickly.
- A JD from an accredited law school and exceptional academic credentials.
- Excited to work in a fast-paced, start-up environment and comfortable with legal grey areas.
- Licensed to practice law in the jurisdiction in which you live, New York, or California.
