Responsibilities

As the Renewable Energy Strategy Director with Hines, you will be a key member of the Carbon team, with a focus on leading and managing key aspects of Hines’ overall energy procurement and renewable energy strategy as assigned by the Firm’s carbon strategy officer. Your role is expected to contribute significantly to the leadership, development, implementation and coordination of the firm’s carbon management and reduction program while creating alignment between carbon strategy and energy procurement. Your specific responsibilities in the program will be as directed by the firm’s carbon strategy officer.

 

Key responsibilities will include managing the development and implementation of Hines’ energy procurement, renewable energy strategy and commitments across Central and Global regions. The role will specifically require managing the development of renewable energy and energy procurement required to enable and support the firm’s pathway to net zero operational carbon. Upon development of the strategy, a large part of the responsibilities will be to support the firm’s implementation and progress reporting.

 

ESG Carbon Strategy Implementation through actively managing the following tasks:

  • Lead Hines’ renewable energy and energy procurement strategy, within the scope and boundaries established by the carbon strategy officer, to meet expected firm-wide Net Zero targets and new business strategies
  • Initiate, establish, navigate relationships with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders to understand and present new business opportunities within the renewable energy sector in the US and other strategic locations identified by the firm’s leadership
  • Provide a feasibility, roadmap and business plan for possible development or acquisition of low carbon opportunities
  • Develop strategic vision, roadmap and execution plans for greater scalability, transparency and profitability for on-site renewable energy installations on all of our asset types.
  • Lead Hines’ regions through a framework for successful execution of PPAs, VPPA’s and other renewable energy transactions developing necessary tools, guidance and data
  • Develop a business plan for what is required to meet Hines Net Zero goals from a renewable energy perspective
  • Manage, participate and provide insight to the production of carbon related materials, including support on presentations, proposals, request for information, select client education and recommendations.
  • Work with Innovation and other Central groups to develop 5-10 year outlook on various carbon related technologies and applicability to meeting the firm’s goals
  • Envision diagraming, mapping and digital illustrations of technical concepts to visualize intent for non-technical audiences
  • Collaborate on data management, including identifying types of data, sources and management systems for reporting; in support of tracking carbon related KPIs
  • Guide Central, Investment Management and regional ESG leads on energy procurement and renewable energy related activities
  • Review energy contracts and other agreements to approve key terms and ensure alignment with the firm’s strategic goals and green energy criteria.

Internal and External Relationships

 

  • Establish and maintain strong working relationships with Hines teams: Central Operations, Innovation, Business Technology, Corporate Analytics, Central Engineering, Conceptual Construction Groups, Management Service Committee, Investment Management, Corporate Communications, Human Resources and Compliance among others.
  • As directed by the carbon strategy officer, oversee consultation and coordination of initiatives with third party ESG consultants and academic institutions.


Qualifications

Minimum Requirements include:

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Energy, Business, Finance, Accounting, Engineering, or a related technical field from an accredited institution
  • Seven or more years of experience in energy procurement and delivering complex, multi-stakeholder renewable energy projects. Preference for experience working directly with large corporate customers (by account management, business development, service delivery) at senior executive level
  • Experience in US and European energy markets, renewable energy development, carbon markets and exposure to renewable power purchasing agreements (VPPA, PPA, etc). Direct experience negotiating energy contracts preferred.
  • Working knowledge of carbon accounting standards and reporting frameworks
  • Ability to manage a team to provide timely, effective dynamic and impactful outcomes
  • Exhibit excellent communication skills to successfully lead projects to completion, knowing how to approach people, create meaningful relationships, and articulate a clearly established vision
  • Proven ability to work with multiple stakeholders in complex business settings and prioritize work as required; proficiency in project management, change management and/or process development and improvement
  • Ability to create a well-defined project plan, capturing business requirements and project scope, while sequencing activities and resources
  • Strong organizational, analytical skills, attention to detail, able to work independently
  • Ability to think and work at both strategic and tactical levels as required
  • Possess strong leadership skills by effectively coaching, guiding, and motivating others to help move a project forward and deliver positive outcome
  • Identify risks at the outset of a project and develop proper mitigation plans in the event that the risk does occur
  • Ability to be a critical thinker, remaining objective, analyze the facts, and evaluating options without bias to solve complex problems
  • Self-starter, rigorous, flexible, and with good people skills able to work collaboratively with strong self sufficiency
  • Knowledge of real estate financing and building operations

  • Compensation: New York - $167,800 - $230,780; Houston - To be determined based on experience
