Job Description

Are you great at financial strategy and want to put that talent to use to support a triple bottom line? Do you excel at financial management and have a proven track record of inspiring leadership?  Are you a history buff, or someone who loves the outdoors?  We have the job for you!

The Presidio Trust is seeking a Chief Financial Officer to lead our organization into an even brighter financial future. The Trust is a truly unique organization; we run a 1,500-acre national park at the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge, attracting 10 million visits a year to a natural landscape like no other. Whether hiking along Lover’s Lane, climbing atop a cannon from WWII, or viewing the Pacific Ocean from a panoramic overlook, our work enables us to continue operating this renowned natural treasure as a park site that supports itself with earned revenue.

The Presidio Trust’s operations are unique, complex, and fascinating. We support ourselves with more than $100 million in revenue we earn each year by renovating and leasing historic former military buildings as homes and workspaces, operating hotels and a golf course, and charging for utilities and municipal services.  We then invest that revenue into maintaining and improving our natural resources that include historic forest, dunes, streams, trails and gardens and our hundreds of historic buildings, all to bring joy and wonder to our residents and visitors alike.

We need an experienced Chief Financial Officer to take our financial operations to the next level.  This person will lead a talented staff, and work hand-in-hand with sophisticated, savvy colleagues to steward and share the beauty, history, and wonder of the Presidio for everyone to enjoy forever.

The results of your work won’t just be seen in dashboards, spreadsheets and charts. They will be seen by millions of people each year who come to enjoy the majestic rejuvenated natural areas, magnificent vistas, and restored historic buildings. This is a rare opportunity to combine your financial expertise at a purpose-driven organization operating in, and for, one of the truly incomparable pieces of land that exists. If you are the right fit, you will leave a lasting legacy, ensuring the Presidio’s success for decades to come.

Applications received by March 4, 2022 will receive first consideration. We are planning to hold the first round of interviews on March 15 & 16, and the second round on March 30 & 31 (updated dates), so please hold those dates if you are serious about this role.  And please apply even if you miss those dates; we’re going to wait until we find just the right person for this essential role.

THE OPPORTUNITY/ATTRACTIONS:

  • Location, location, location! Spend your work life among the trees and beauty of a world-renowned, iconic national park site.
  •  Guide a broad range of real estate, hospitality and municipality business activities and associated accounting and financial analysis and reporting.
  • Work at the unique intersection of a mission-driven organization that is also solidly self-sustaining and is very well supported by the community.
  • Hold a broad, highly visible, leadership role with a board appointed by the President of the United States.
  • Become a member of a highly collaborative, skilled executive team.
  • Lead talented direct reports who are looking for a great leader to take them to the next level.

IDEAL CANDIDATE:

You are an experienced financial manager with a proven track record of using numbers to drive strategy in complex operations.  You thrive on coaching and inspiring talented staff to greater achievements.  And you can plug right into a committed team of executive colleagues.  Your multi-faceted experience, creativity and proactivity enable you to deal with the myriad of issues that arise in a federal agency that operates profitable businesses, utilities, and municipal functions to power an iconic national park site.  You are able to see through complexity quickly, and you can understand and move between private and public sector practices as needed to ensure the Trust’s financial success.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and maintain financial strategies to continuously improve the Presidio Trust’s operation and maintenance of the Trust’s buildings, lands and infrastructure.
  • Lead and coach Controller to ensure the accuracy and integrity of the Trust’s finances and financial statements.

  • Actively participate in the Executive Team, which sets the strategic direction on a broad range of business and operational issues.
  • Participate in public and private meetings of the Trust Board of Directors.
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with the Trust’s customers, partners and stakeholders.
  • Represent the Trust with the U.S. Department of the Treasury and the White House Office of Management and Budget on financial matters.
  • Manage the Trust’s risks, including enterprise risk management and insurance.
  • Lead and coach the Trust’s information technology leader and team. (Possible addition, depending on your experience and interest.)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

We keep these limited because we believe great colleagues come in all different sizes, backgrounds, colors and abilities.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Economics, Accounting, Finance or related field.
  • A minimum of 15 years of relevant experience in financial management, of which at least five must be in the private sector.
  • A minimum of 10 years of supervisory experience.
  • Interest and ability in working with a triple bottom line of people, planet and performance.
  • Interest and ability to work in a collaborative executive team that is dedicated to the interests of the Trust over the interests of individual divisions.
  • Excellent judgment, including an ability to consider issues outside of the financial realm.
  • A strong sense of integrity.
  • A good sense of humor.

THE TEAM YOU WILL LEAD:

Our Finance Team is a diverse group of professionals. As part of a one-of-a-kind organization, the team brings together innovative private sector strategies while following federal policies and guidelines to steer the Presidio Trust’s business development and operations decisions, to support all accounting and reporting activities, and to ensure the park continues to be available for all visitors through sustainability and self-sufficiency.

In partnership with the National Park Service and the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, and at no cost to taxpayers, the Presidio Trust brings alive the unique historic, natural, and recreational assets of the Presidio for the inspiration, education, health, and enjoyment of all people. The Presidio of San Francisco is managed by two federal agencies in partnership: 300 acres along the coast are managed by the National Park Service, while the rest of the Presidio, 1,191 acres, is managed by the Presidio Trust. Both agencies work in close collaboration with the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, a non-profit organization that provides indispensable philanthropic and programmatic support. The Presidio Trust is an unusual federal agency. In our founding bipartisan legislation, Presidio Trust Act, the Trust was charged with operating the park without taxpayer support. Funds earned through leasing homes and workspaces and operating hotels, a golf course, and venues are used for park management and upkeep. Over the past two decades, the Trust and our partners have converted this former military post into a welcoming national park site in an urban area. The Presidio is home to a large community of residents and tenants, and offers unique recreation, hospitality, and educational opportunities to people throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and the world.
