Job Description
- Oversight review of federal, state, and local tax returns for April’s property partnerships on a timely basis
- Gather accounting information, obtain necessary clarification on issues noted, and communicate with various departments concerning any questions that arise
- Provide clear communication of review comments and observations to applicable third-party tax accounting firms
- Address escalated issues promptly
- Review partnership and corporate legal documents as needed to ensure accurate preparation of tax returns in line with the agreements
- Work with other internal teams in the organization to ensure that all transactions are correctly recorded and timely
- Assist in providing BREIT and other investors with required annual tax reporting
- Assist with the planning, developing, and executing internalization of tax returns from external consultants and leveraging of Center of Excellence resources
- Review calculations and returns of federal and state taxable income for certain upper-tier partnership, corporate, and disregarded entities prepared by staff
- Assist with the mailing and electronic filing of tax returns
- Review monthly tax estimates impacting BREIT, including tax gain/loss calculations
- Conduct research as necessary to determine compliance with tax laws; read periodicals to maintain knowledge about changing tax laws, planning opportunities, and filing requirements
- Assist with the documentation and administration of filing tax returns on a timely basis
- Research, resolve, and respond to state and federal tax notices
- Consider ways to streamline processes to optimize efficiency and resources
- Provide support on special projects and ad hoc reporting and analyses as necessary
- Mentor staff accountants and assist in their professional development
- Demonstrate a high attention to detail and willingness to learn
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a public accounting firm or tax department
- Strong working knowledge of partnership and corporate federal and state taxation
- Ability to work on issues where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors
- Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action
- Normally receives little instruction on day-to-day work and general instructions on new assignments
- Detail oriented and possess strong analytical, communication, and organizational skills
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment
- Can collaborate across functional areas and work with various teams
- Proficiency with spreadsheets and tax preparation software
- Advanced tax degree and/or CPA certification
- Prior real estate income tax experience
- Knowledge of REIT and/or low-income housing taxation
- Experience with FAS2000
