A Maryland-based real estate investment and development organization has an exciting opportunity for a Staff Accountant to join its accounting team. With a dedicated and professional culture and a long-standing presence in the region, the firm’s real estate portfolio includes commercial office, multi-family residential, and retail assets. 
 
The Staff Accountant supports the accounting function through accurate execution of transactional accounting activities, preparation of reconciliations and schedules, and participation in the monthly close process. This role works under the direction of the Controller and in coordination across accounting teams, playing an important role in maintaining the integrity of financial records across multiple entities. 
 
Duties & Responsibilities: 
  • Perform accounts payable activities, including invoice processing, coding, and payment preparation, and record related general ledger entries and supporting documentation in accordance with established policies and controls 
  • Perform accounts receivable and cash receipts activities, including recording deposits, posting receipts, and supporting routine collections tracking and reporting 
  • Support the month-end close process through timely preparation of assigned reconciliations, schedules, and supporting documentation, including bank and credit card reconciliations 
  • Support intercompany accounting activities, including recording intercompany journal entries, monitoring balances, and preparing related billings 
  • Prepare assigned financial reports and supporting schedules for internal reporting, tax preparation, and compliance requirements 
  • Maintain organized, accurate, and auditable workpapers to support review and approval processes 
  • Identify discrepancies, issues, or variances and escalate in accordance with established procedures and review protocols 
  • Coordinate with the Controller, Accounting Managers, and other team members to resolve routine accounting questions, follow-ups, and information requests

Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience
  • 3–4 years of accounting experience in a professional services, real estate, or multi-entity environment
  • Experience preparing journal entries, reconciliations, and supporting schedules for review
  • Hands-on experience performing accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger functions, including month-end close 
  • Strong attention to detail and documentation standards
  • Ability to follow established processes and escalate issues appropriately
  • Proficiency using accounting systems and tools to support full-cycle accounting activities, including strong Excel skills and familiarity with ERP-based financial reporting environments
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to document work performed and coordinate with the Controller and accounting team members
