Vice President Accounting

Position Overview
The Vice President of Accounting is responsible for overseeing all accounting and finance functions for Fortis Property Management. This role serves as the leader of the accounting and finance team, ensuring financial integrity, scalable processes, and disciplined financial management as the company grows from its current 14,000 units. The VP of Accounting will be responsible for developing a high-performing accounting team capable of supporting future growth.
The Vice President of Accounting is both a hands-on operator and people leader, responsible for building and institutionalizing scalable accounting infrastructure, procedures, and systems to support rapid growth while working in tandem with the President and Chief Operating Officer to ensure departmental accountability, financial strength and scalability.
Experience with multifamily property-level accounting and strong working knowledge of Yardi are required.
Core Responsibilities
Financial Leadership & Strategy
● Partner with executive leadership to support Fortis’s growth strategy through sound financial planning, analysis, and forecasting.
● Translate operational and portfolio-level performance into clear financial insights for leadership decision-making.
● Support long-range planning, capital needs forecasting, and unit-growth modeling as the portfolio scales.
● Prepare the organization for increased financial complexity associated with scale, acquisitions, and geographic expansion.
Accounting Operations & Financial Reporting
● Lead all accounting functions, including general ledger, month-end close, financial reporting, budgeting, and audit coordination.
● Ensure timely, accurate, and GAAP-compliant financial statements across the property management portfolio
● Oversee revenue recognition, expense allocation, intercompany accounting, and property-level financial controls.
● Continuously evaluate and strengthen internal controls to protect company assets and ensure data integrity.
Policies, Procedures & Process Improvement
● Lead the revamp and formalization of accounting policies and procedures to align with Fortis’s growth trajectory.
● Standardize workflows, documentation, and controls across properties and regions.
● Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, automation, and scalability within accounting and finance operations.
● Partner with operations and property teams to ensure financial processes support—not hinder—business execution.
Technology & Systems Oversight
● Oversee accounting systems, financial reporting tools, and related integrations.
● Lead system enhancements, implementations, or upgrades as the organization scales.
● Ensure finance technology supports accurate reporting, strong controls, and meaningful analytics.
Leadership, Culture & Team Development
● Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting and finance team, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
● Build bench strength within the team by identifying and developing future leaders.
● Provide coaching, feedback, and professional development opportunities that help team members grow with the organization.

Cross-Functional Partnership
● Serve as a trusted financial partner to operations, property management, third party clients and executive leadership.
● Clearly communicate financial concepts to non-financial stakeholders.
● Support investor, lender, and external partner and client requests as needed, in coordination with executive leadership.
Qualifications & Experience
Education & Credentials
● Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
● CPA preferred, MBA or master’s degree a plus.
Experience
● Minimum of 5–8 years of progressive finance and accounting leadership experience within property management.
● Demonstrated experience leading accounting teams and managing month-end close, reporting, and audits.
● Proven track record of scaling accounting processes in a growing organization preferably with unit counts of 20,000 or more.
● Experience partnering closely with executive leadership and operational teams.
