The Institute for Real Estate Studies (IRES) is a privately-sponsored research institution. Established in 1985, the purpose of IRES is to foster discussion and research between academicians and business professionals in the area of real estate and to provide a focal point for real estate education at Penn State.

The Mission of the Institute is:
-To support the real estate faculty and programs at Penn State in their efforts at achieving international prominence as a Top-5 program.
-To sponsor and support rigorous research focused upon financial and economic aspects of real estate markets and institutions.
-To provide support for the real estate concentration of the undergraduate major in the Department of Risk Management, the real estate course electives in the MBA program, and the real estate major in the Ph.D. program. In this capacity, the Institute serves as the focal point and physical presence for students interested in real estate at Penn State.

Program Highlights

The Institute for Real Estate Studies is the focal point for Penn State’s “Research with Impact” in the real estate industry. The Institute sponsors leading-edge scholarship on a wide variety of topics related to the real estate industry. Research findings are published in the top real estate, finance, and economic journals as well as in the Institute’s Working Paper Series. The Institute actively sponsors research interaction between affiliated faculty and graduate and undergraduate students.

The Institute for Real Estate Studies works closely with the Department of Risk Management to promote real estate education at Penn State. Working closely with the Real Estate Advisory Board, the Institute is at the forefront in designing a unique, cross-disciplinary real estate education curriculum that provides students with the knowledge and skills to conquer tomorrow’s challenges. As part of its real estate education initiatives, the Institute sponsors internship opportunities as well as awarding fellowships and scholarships to attract the best and brightest students to the real estate industry.

The Institute for Real Estate Studies provides a platform for the discussion of critical public policy initiatives in the real estate industry. The Institute sponsors numerous seminars and conferences that bring internationally recognized real estate scholars and experts to Penn State. In addition, the Institute hosts the semiannual Advance Realty Group Lecture that brings acclaimed real estate practitioners to campus, providing unparalleled networking opportunities for students. The Institute also serves as the bridge between the real estate faculty and the Real Estate Advisory Board, creating connections that enhance real estate research and education at the Smeal College of Business.
