About The Job:
Marker Management is seeking a Controller to join our accounting team and play a vital role in our financial operations. The Controller will be responsible for the day-to-day leadership of the accounting staff. This position will provide business and financial expertise in support of operational and financial activities and will ensure ongoing compliance with regulatory requirements. It requires strong analytical and technical abilities and demands fast but carefully thought-out results. Responsibilities:
· Manage and oversee day-to-day property accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger functions.
· Lead with the preparation and review of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in compliance with GAAP.
· Assist in the development and maintenance of internal controls.
· Lead with the development and review of account reconciliations and ensure accuracy and completeness of financial records.
· Lead and manage the day to day activities of the staff property accountant, including task prioritization, workflow management, and review of deliverables to ensure accuracy and timeliness.
· Assist with budget preparations, variance analysis, and financial forecasting.
· Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify and implement process improvements and best practices
· Provide valuable insights and recommendations to support financial decision-making.
· Mentor and provide guidance to a staff property accountant and senior property account accountant.
· Prepare and review complex journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial statements.
· Assist with the preparation and review of tax filings, including income tax returns.
· Support external audit processes by providing request documentation and explanations.
· Perform ad-hoc financial analysis, reports, and projects as needed.
· Stay up-to-date with accounting regulations and standards, ensuring GAAP compliance
Qualifications:
· Bachelor’s degree in accounting; CPA certification is a plus.
· Minimum eight (8) years relevant student housing and/or multifamily real estate accounting experience, with at least five (5) years in a senior role: the ideal candidate has experience in third-party managed, PE backed REITs.
· Strong knowledge of accounting principles (specific to the real estate industry), regulations, and financial reporting standards.
· Proficiency in accounting software and MS Excel; experience with ERP systems (Entrata experience preferred) is a plus.
