Position Overview

Are you passionate about commercial real estate, great with numbers and know how to take care of details? We are hiring a Controller to join our team in Lafayette, California!  This is a newly opened position, and we are seeking an energetic individual who wants to make an impact in building future infrastructure that is set up for continued growth. Reporting directly to our Chief Executive Officer, the Controller will be responsible for managing joint venture accounting and respective tax returns, property accounting, monthly loan draws, working with auditors, portfolio analytics, portfolio budgeting, managing internal and external property-related financial reporting and liaising with parent company corporate accounting team.  

The Controller will also be responsible for hiring, training, and supervising accounting personnel.  This is a great opportunity for qualified candidates to utilize and develop their existing skills in commercial real estate.  This role also offers qualified candidates growth opportunities, a significant amount of autonomous responsibility and the chance to be part of a dynamic and talented group of real estate professionals.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Monthly review of third-party manager prepared property financial statements.  Analyze variances, research, and resolve issues.
  • Review monthly joint venture financial reports for accuracy and completeness before distributing to partners
  • Manage property level compliance reporting to lenders and joint venture partners
  • Manage property level income tax reporting, including coordination with parent company corporate tax team
  • Manage project cost accounting reports, contractor progress payments and contract administrator review of contractor lien releases and insurance
  • Manage lender and/or joint venture draw requests
  • Review annual property operating budgets to ensure compliance with acquisition underwriting business plan
  • Coordinate with parent company corporate accounting team on the preparation of annual financial business plan, quarterly updates, and monthly cash flow forecast
  • Coordinate with parent company corporate accounting team regarding with the annual audit
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Ability to supervise, manage and mentor a team of accounting and operational professionals

Desired Education and/or Experience

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance
  • 7 years of accounting and managerial experience, preferably with a minimum of 3 years in commercial real estate
  • Experience working with syndications and working with institutional capital partners

Skills

  • Strong hands-on management, organizational, communication and leadership skills
  • Excellent analytical, financial planning and budgeting skills
  • Understanding and working knowledge of GAAP, as well as audit best practices
  • Ability to adapt and thrive in a dynamic environment and remain flexible while managing multiple deadlines and priorities – must be organized and accurate
  • Strong internal and external “customer” focus and excellent relationship management skills with a team-player mentality
  • Able to work independently, but must enjoy cross-functional collaboration with business leadership
  • Passion for continuous improvement while developing process improvements necessary to help the business and accounting function scale
  • Capable of working with the entire suite of Microsoft products; Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project
  • Experience with SAP, MRI or Yardi is a plus
